“Reliefs,” 2022. Acrylic on canvas. Dimensions variable.

Reliefs is a series of process-based paintings which originate from excess materials generated by other projects. Paint palettes are saved as a confetti-like substance and recycled into new creations using mould-making techniques. Released from their template, fresh geometric forms are carefully applied in grids to canvas. Within each small square of paint, a unique moment is captured and together they build patterns that might continue on forever.

The results may bring to mind edible confections enjoyed during childhood and celebratory occasions; terrazzo tiles adorning and protecting architecture; patchwork quilts warming our bodies and homes; or perhaps a manufactured landscape. There is a dialogue between Modern abstract painting movements and consumer aesthetics.

Rather than discard, “waste” materials are treated as new ingredients to reimagine the construction of a painting. In this way, a self-generating cycle begins and the possibilities are boundless.
